Decentralizing Workplaces
(OTTAWA) The events of Sept. 11 are causing Canadian employers to disperse their workers in more locations, a real estate expert says.

Since the attacks in the United States in 2001, more large Canadian organizations have shifted from centralized operations to more geographically dispersed facilities, says Tony Gill, Senior Director, Corporate Services, with Real Facilities Inc., a corporate real estate advisory firm.

“Real estate managers need to be aware of how interrelated their own activities are to general business operations, both within the organization, as well as within a broader network of organizational participants. This is particularly important to sectors of the economy that have a fiduciary duty to their clients to remain in continuous operation, such as the financial and insurance sectors, as well as all levels of government,” Gill said at the Real Property Institute of Canada’s conference in Ottawa yesterday. “Thus, organizations will increasingly employ measures to neutralize the risk associated with clustering, by adopting work cultures that will become more dispersed.”

Gill spent the last year researching the impacts of the attacks on commercial real estate in Canada. He found that employers that decentralize can have economic effects on communities that don’t normally have large organizations. Decentralizing a workforce is changing how employers staff their organizations, he says.
